Our History

Independent Living Services was founded by Peggy Schneider in 1970 after Title XIX was introduced into law. Title XIX established “everyone has the right to live in the least restrictive environment possible,” and state agencies received federal funding to help turn this into a reality.

ILS used their first grant to purchase a home to act as a stepping stone for emerging adults with disabilities to learn skills that would ultimately lead to more independent lifestyles.

Greenbrier Apartments opens, a 17 unit outdoor apartment complex

ILS moves into our new 32,000 sq. ft. building in Conway

In 2019, ILS won the Greenbrier Non-Profit Business of the Year! - Our consumers who participate in Profile Productions shred and recycle 10,000 lbs of paper per month! - We provide services to 250 people with intellectual disabilities in the Centra…
